Fire destroys 10 apartments near Durango

DURANGO – A fire destroyed 10 apartments and damaged up to five others early Friday, but only one minor injury was reported, authorities said.A firefighter suffered a dislocated thumb, said La Plata County sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender. No injuries to residents were reported.Firefighters were called to the Whispering Pines Apartments about 12 miles north of Durango shortly after 3:30 a.m.Bender said firefighters were hampered by low water pressure and the lack of a sprinkler system in the apartments. He said the complex was built before sprinklers were required.Bender said 20 residents were evacuated but some had been allowed to return. At least 10 people took refuge at a shelter set up by the Red Cross. The fire began in a third-floor apartment. Bender said investigators believe it may have started when a resident fell asleep with food cooking on his stove. Bender said a smoke alarm awakened the man, and he called authorities.
