Firearm found in Summit Middle School student’s locker
On Friday morning, Feb. 21, it was reported to Summit Middle School officials that a student was in possession of a firearm at the school.
The weapon was immediately found locked in a student’s locker. At no time was any threat made toward any students or staff.
The student involved was immediately removed from class. Local law enforcement officials responded and the student and the weapon were removed from campus.
It appears at this time that the weapon was to be used after school for target practice. Regardless of intent, it was a violation of state law and the policies of the Summit School District Board of Education for the student to have the gun at school.
Because of the criminal nature of the allegation, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office has taken the lead in the investigation.
“The safety of our students is our highest priority. Keeping one another safe takes a commitment from all of us — students, families, staff and law enforcement. Our district and middle school team took this situation very seriously and I am proud of our school leaders and sheriff’s office for the expedient response,” Summit School District Superintendent Heidi Pace stated in a news release.
“The school district should be commended for their immediate and thorough response,” Sheriff John Minor said in the release. “At this time we believe no threats were made and we have no reason to believe that there was a security risk to other students at the school.”
Information was sent to school district families regarding the incident. Families are encouraged to talk to their children about safety and the importance of reporting any concerns promptly to parents, school officials or the police.
Students may also report information anonymously to SAFE-2-TELL at 1-877-542-7233 or http://www.safe2tell.org.
The sheriff’s office released no further information, stating that the incident is under investigation.
