Firefighters, families to get free heart screenings

summit daily news

The Boone Heart Institute will be giving free preventative cardiovascular screenings to Red, White and Blue firefighters and their families beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday at Fire Station 6 in Breckenridge.

Firefighters, who spend their careers in a high risk, high stress environment are at a higher risk of heart disease than the average American. A report released by the U.S. Fire Administration said 48 percent of firefighters die from heart attacks and strokes, most of which are caused by stress and overexertion.

The Breckenridge screening event is part of the Boon Heart Institute’s BraveHeart Program. Fifteen to 20 firefighters will receive screenings on Monday and additional firefighter screenings will be scheduled in the future.
