DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

SUMMIT COUNTY – Each year in the West, wildfires destroy homes. But those damages can often be minimized or prevented by taking precautions. Snake River Fire and Summit County’s fire mitigation officer will host a workshop this weekend to teach homeowners about defensive tactics they can use.The Firewise workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Snake River Fire station at 22393 Highway 6.Wildfire mitigation officer Patti Maguire will cover topics such as defensible space for homes, safety tips, issues such as fire department access to neighborhoods and homes and more.Snake River Fire public information officer Lt. David Williams cited numerous statistics in encouraging homeowners to come to the workshop: Last year, 85,953 fires were reported across the country. Those fires burned more than 4,918,088 acres. The cost of fighting those fires is estimated at more than $1,326,138,000.”By being proactive and taking necessary steps, we can work together to bring these numbers down,” Williams wrote in a press release on the workshop. “Even with the recent rainfall, Colorado is still in the midst of a drought year.”Williams added that reduced snowpack levels and increased timber fuels from insect infestations have led to forecasts from the National Interagency Fire Center predicting the potential for an above-average fire season.Fore more information on the workshop, call (970) 496-4703.
