Forest Service enacts new rules for long-term campers

The White River National Forest has enacted new policies to limit long camping trips on forest lands. From now on, campers can occupy an individual campsite for no more than 14 days during a 60-day period.

The policy changes were made “to provide consistency regarding camping limitations on national forests across the state,” a U.S. Forest Service press release states.

“From a customer perspective, consistency on all forests in the state is a good thing, because it’s not unusual that people cross forest boundaries when they’re camping,” Forest Supervisor Martha Ketelle said.

“There might be exceptions in some developed recreation sites and some areas that are very popular,” the press release states. “For example, there are campsites in Aspen that only allow campers to stay three days, or some areas where you can camp for more than 14 days.”

These exceptions will be marked by postings at affected campsites, the Forest Service said.

After the designated 14 days, campers must move at least three miles away to a different campsite. Once there, they can continue camping for another 14 days.

However, campers may not exceed 28 days of camping in any forest in Colorado within a 60-day period.

Violation of the new rules can result in a maximum fine of $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for a “legal entity other than an individual,” or six months in jail.

The new policies will remain in effect until Dec. 31, 2004, or until the forest district in question rescinds the order.
