Former resident dies in motorcycle accident

John Nyberg, 50, originally from Apple Valley, Minn., and recently of Stevenson, Wash., was killed near Billings, Mont., Aug. 5 while riding to the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota.

A contractor for many years in Summit County, Durango and, most recently, Stevenson. Nyberg was also the co-owner of the Rendezvous restaurant and bar in Frisco in the late 1970s and early ’80s. He was one of the original passholders at Copper Mountain in 1972 and was a frequent flier at Copper Mountain and Keystone for the weekly Business League racing circuit in the mid- to late-’70s.

With a passion for skiing, Nyberg often could be found at Copper, Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Pass, exploring routes that are now out of bounds.

Nyberg is survived by his wife, Jackie, stepchildren Joshua and Joely, daughter Jessica, ex-wife Amy, sister Chris, brother Steve and father Herb. His mother, Donna, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at Arapahoe Basin at 1 p.m. Oct. 5. A reception will follow at the Snake River Saloon.
