Fourth body in 14 months found in Garfield County

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – Hunters found human remains in a remote spot north of town, the fourth such discovery in Garfield County in 14 months. The remains were that of a 50- to 60-year-old man who was apparently backpacking when he died in his tent, Sheriff Lou Vallario said Monday. Investigators found no identification, and the remains did not match anyone reported missing, he said.In July 2003, a fisherman found a human skull in the Colorado River, and the next month, a man and his son found part of a human skeleton on a steep hillside near Glenwood Springs. Neither of those remains has been identified.Last month, investigators found a body in the Colorado River that was later identified as Thomas James Atkinson, 22, of Fruita. In the most recent discovery, investigators believe the man was white and about 6-foot-1. Authorities believe he may have died as long ago as 1999, based on the dates on the money he was carrying.Investigators have no leads but plan to distribute a composite sketch based on the man’s skull.
