Frank Lilly: Community input crucial in equal access debate

Regarding the new “equal access” program of Summit School District: Why are so many parent’s so angry? It’s about academic standards. Although the school board and all district professionals will deny it, everyone knows this district has never been known for especially high academic standards. And like it or not, this program will result in the further dilution of standards for those students who are college bound and who hope to compete in life with their peers who have grown up in an environment where the most important skills are something other than inverted aerials on a snowboard.

It’s not about racism, it’s not about elitism. It’s about academic standards. I have the utmost respect for the intentions and dedication of our school board members. Their goals are laudable. The goals of last decade’s No Child Left Behind were laudable as well. But good intentions do not guarantee effective education.

Thank you, Dr. Pace, for listening to the community’s concerns and initiating the task force in a timely manner. Let’s hope the board will be open minded and actually listen to what comes out of the task force, rather than making it an exercise in hot air. Perhaps they can find a solution that will give the lower level learners an opportunity to rise up, without pulling down the higher achievers.

And perhaps the next time the school board is considering a major change in our schools, they will solicit input from the community before it is a done deal.
