The legendary funk master, Maceo Parker, plays a free show at the Riverwalk Center this afternoon as the culminating event of the Breck festivities around Stage 5 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. An accomplished and prolific musician, Parker is said to have played “with each and every leader of funk,” including his start with James Brown – which he describes as “like being at University” – and George Clinton and Prince, to name a few. “He’s the living, breathing pulse which connects the history of funk in one golden thread,” promoters boast, “the cipher which unravels dance music down to its core.”Other collaborations have included Ray Charles, Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ani DiFranco, James Taylor and De La Soul.”When people talk about legends they mean ‘they’re done, but boy did they do good,'” DiFranco said. “When I think of Maceo Parker I think of legendary funk master and horn player, but not ‘legend’ in the term that he’s done. He’s still doing it. And that to me makes a really legendary person.”Maceo Parker’s new album, “Soul Classics,” is scheduled for release in September. It was recorded last year with WDR Big Band with Christian McBride and Queen Cora Dunham and arranged and conducted by Michael Abene.”We chose Maceo Parker because he puts on a super high energy show,” said Mike Schilling, co-chair of the Breckenridge USA Pro Challenge planning committee. “We think that his style would go great and keep the energy going all night in Breckenridge.””Quite simply, there is no better living showman than Maceo Parker,” the “Westword” writes. “Catching one of the alto sax maestro’s marathon three-hour shows is a truly transcendent experience for any fan of funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B and soul: His performances are never disappointing, always worth the money and a funky, funky good time.”Tonight in Breck, you can get your money’s worth and groove your brains out to Maceo without laying out a dime. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the show starts at 4:30.
