Free mammograms at care clinic

FRISCO – To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jennifer Gonzalez of the Summit Community Care Clinic advises all women over 40 to get a mammogram and a clinical breast exam.

Summit County women interested in learning about breast health should call Gonzalez at the clinic. “I can prescreen them through the phone and they can get a free mammogram and a free clinical breast exam,” she said.

The care clinic is a nonprofit health care clinic for uninsured and underinsured workers and residents in Summit County. Part of the clinic’s community service is a year-round program for free mammograms and exams because of funds donated by Susan G. Komen for the Cure and a Women’s Wellness Connection grant from the state of Colorado.

According to Gonzalez, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure is responsible for giving the Care Clinic $59,725 in 2009-2010. This covers free mammograms and clinical breast exams for women aged 40 through 49.

“We’ve been getting support from Susan since 2004,” Gonzalez said. “A lot of the money comes from the Romp to Stomp event and other events that they hold.”

Romp to Stomp is a snowshoeing race held each spring at the Frisco Nordic Center.

The Women’s Wellness Connection grant also pays for a year-round program specializing in annual exams for women aged 50-64. Women over 64 should qualify for Medicaid, Gonzalez said.

Checking for abnormal breast lumps is “the only way you can prevent breast cancer,” Gonzalez added. “Prevention as everyone says is the key. Early detection may save your life.”
