Free manure drop-off week begins June 1

The composting program is a new effort to increase waste diversion at the landfill. To jumpstart the composting program, the Summit County Waste Facility will be hosting a free manure drop-off week from June 1 to June 10. Manure in any amount will be accepted during regular landfill hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon for no charge.Mixing wood chips with manure is one of the most common composting “recipes” and will allow landfill managers to effectively test combinations suitable for high-altitude, arid-climate composting.Eventually, the composting program may grow to accept other materials, like food scraps, low-grade non-recyclable papers, and new biodegradable plastic materials made from corn. For more information on landfill or recycling programs contact the Summit County Waste Facility at (970) 468-9348 or High Country Conservation Center at (970) 668-5703.
