Friends of the Libraries talk features Kenyan village slides

“Welcome to Karungu,” a slide show about a Kenyan village on the shores of Lake Victoria, will be featured at 7 p.m. Friday at the North Branch Library in Silverthorne.

This is a free presentation sponsored by the Friends of the Summit County Libraries.

Retired registered nurse Sandra Hartnett volunteered her time on two occasions in a hospital in Karungu. Her slides show the people, community and lands of the area.

One striking difference of her two visits was the countryside in a drought, during her first visit and following a wet spring during her second visit in 2003.

The area is dominated by family farms. Some fishing is done on Lake Victoria. The larger fish are sold, the smaller ones are dried and serve as a source of protein.

The region suffers from a number of health issues including malaria, which kills a number of young children, and AIDS. Often the result of AIDS is the death of one or both parents, so there are large numbers of orphans.

Some of Hartnett’s slides will show an orphanage that the hospital has started to help feed and school the children. During her time in Karungu, Hartnett was a teacher working hands-on with the nurses. She will take questions following her slide presentation.

Donations are accepted. Monies raised help defray budget cuts and assist with future purchases of books, computers and other materials. For information, call the North Branch Library at (970) 468-5887.
