Friendship and fun in the Backstages latest kids show

BRECKENRIDGE Denver comedian and playwright Edith Weiss (Hyronomous A. Frog: The Frog Prince) has brought her good-natured storytelling to the Backstage Theatres Childrens Theatre once again for Two Dumb Dogs, which opens tonight at the Breckenridge Theatre.Skip Wee and Backstage Theatre artistic director Chris Willard play Floof and Ferdo, the two dumb dogs of the title. The two characters take a journey into the woods, running away to find adventure and meeting several characters along the way.Its much like young people trying to discover their place in the world, said director Michael Grittner.Susan Harrison plays Mimi, the French poodle of Queen Malevella (Laura Faith Rohrbacher). Theres also a wise owl and a prince imprisoned in stone (Dustin Murphy), through which Floof and Ferdo learn more about themselves.Melanie Ball plays the Dog Shouter, and helps in training the dogs for their owner Roger.As for playing a dog, Wee said, Its not really a stretch. Dogs are playful and thats how I am.He said of his character Floof, I find out I can make decisions and dont necessarily need Ferdo to tell me what to do.Willard said of the dogs, They learn to appreciate their situation at home sometimes the greener grass is right here.Two Dumb Dogs opens today and plays most Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m., alternating weeks, until Aug. 30. Performances for opening weekend are today at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 7 p.m.. The rest of the performance schedule is July 19, Aug. 2 and 16 at 11 a.m. and July 20, Aug. 3 and 17 at 1 p.m. Final performances are Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. and noon. All shows are at the Breckenridge Theatre, 121 S. Ridge St. in Breckenridge.Tickets are $8 and the running time is approximately one hour.
