Frisco among top towns for ski bumming in style

FRISCO – It’s all about proximity.

Frisco might not have its own ski resort out the back door, but it’s within a short drive to a handful of ski areas. That, and its small-town feel, won Frisco a place among Ski Magazine’s top 18 ski towns this year.

“Move to the Mountains,” the February 2003 cover story, rates 18 top ski towns in three categories: Family-Style Success, A Relaxed Retirement, and Ski Bumming in Style.

According to the magazine’s judges, Frisco ranks as one of the best ski towns for ski bumming, along with Jackson, Wyo.; Sandy, Utah; Tahoe City, Calif.; Whistler, British Columbia and Telluride.

“With Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper and Keystone within 15 minutes and Vail just 30 minutes away, Frisco lies as close to Colorado skiing’s epicenter as you can get,” the article reads. “And in a region that has struggled with uncontrolled development, Frisco has somehow succeeded in preserving both its funky, historic downtown and a small-town community feeling. For Summit County skiers who can’t afford a slopeside palace (and can’t stomach highway-side condo sprawl), Frisco is it.”

Aspen, Harbor Spring, Mich.; Ketchum, Idaho; Stowe, Vt.; Taos, N.M. and Woodstock, Vt., were selected for ski towns in which to retire. Ski towns topping the list for family success were Bend, Ore., Bozeman, Mont., Burlington, Vt., Park City, Utah, Truckee, Calif., and Edwards.
