Frisco eyes wider sidewalks, narrower Main Street

FRISCO – The town council will decide this week at what pace to move ahead with a long-envisioned Main Street revitalization project.

“What we’ll probably end up with is narrower streets and wider sidewalks, with angle parking on both sides of Main Street,” said town manager Michael Penny.

One of the goals is to have more outdoor seating at Main Street eateries during the busy summer season.

At some point in the next few years, the town will need to repave Main Street, so the town is looking to pinpoint the exact timing, Penny said.

The Sept. 21 council discussion is generally intended to determine the timing of the project and the preceding public process, Penny said. Some town funds have already been allocated, but the town hasn’t decided whether to move ahead in 2010 or to wait until 2011, he added.

The project would include all of Main Street from Madison east to Summit Boulevard. In early, informal talks with property owners, the town found there was a good deal of support for the concept. At the same time, the latest town survey found 70 percent of Frisco residents like the “look and feel” of Main Street just the way it is.

“That’ll probably play into the discussions as well,” Penny said.

Before anything happens, the town will hold several open house sessions to get input from citizens.

“It (would) probably be similar to what we did with West Main,” Penny said.

Penny said that, until some of the preliminary design work is done, it’s too soon to say what the net impact on parking would be.
