Frisco kicks off Nordic night skiing Sunday

Lu Snyder

FRISCO – Skiing, sleigh rides, fondue and hot chocolate – it’s the classic winter wonderland experience. It’s also happening Sunday at the Frisco Nordic Center.

The town of Frisco is throwing a grand opening for night skiing at the Nordic center, including free skiing, fondue and hot chocolate. The first 14 people to arrive will receive a free sleigh ride, compliments of Two Below Zero Sleigh Rides.

The lights have been up and evening skiing available for about a month now, but the town wanted an official kickoff for the public, Frisco Community Relations Director Linda Lichtendahl said.

“We hope a bunch of people turn out,” said Lichtendahl, who went for her first evening ski at the Nordic center last week. “It’s really beautiful. It’s just so fun to be out in the solitude. It’s really a neat experience.”

Town officials scheduled the grand opening to coincide with the town’s 33rd annual Gold Rush weekend – which began as citizen Nordic races before becoming a part of the Salomon Nordic Race Series about 12 years ago, Lichtendahl said.

Saturday events include competitive races, a citizen’s 5K classic ski race, a citizen’s 5K snowshoe race and a kids treasure hunt (on skis or snowshoes).
