Frisco launches ‘Beetle Art’ design contest

The Town of Frisco announced a design contest this week, offering artists the chance to see their work adorn a series of fiberglass beetle sculptures that will be featured in town this summer as part of Frisco’s annual Beetle Fest.

A panel of judges will select seven winners from the designs submitted to be brought to life on fiberglass beetle shells, which will be showcased at the new “Beetle Art” public art event in Frisco.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three designs.

The “Beetle Art” sculptures will appear alongside facts about the mountain pine beetle outside sponsoring businesses in Frisco throughout the summer months.

Beetle Fest, a one-day event held in September, is designed to increase awareness of the pine beetle epidemic and raise money for the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District.

Proof of concept submissions for the beetle sculptures should be designed around the 2011 theme, “Look to the Future,” and must be submitted to the Colorado State University Extension office by 5 p.m. March 1. Concepts should be no larger than 14 inches by 17 inches and will be adapted to a 32 inch by 20 inch by 15 inch fiberglass sculpture.

Winners will be contacted to coordinate fiberglass beetle mold distribution.
