Frisco looks to reduce waste at events
FRISCO The green-topped Zero-Waste Station tents, Waste Warrior T-shirts and reusable cups are here to stay at Frisco events. The Town of Frisco plans on continuing these and other conservation and recycling efforts at future events out of concern for the environment.We are realizing that in order to protect the environment we love, we need to be better stewards of it, said Suzanne Lifgren, the towns events manager.Organizers of the Music on Main event diverted 71 percent of its waste from the towns landfill through the efforts. Out of the 620 pounds of waste created, 40 pounds were composted, 400 pounds were recycled and 180 pounds were sent to the landfill.Events done well hopefully draw a large tourist base and, unfortunately, a large amount of waste, Lifgren said.Zero-Waste Stations made their debut at Frisco town clean-ups three years ago, but it wasnt until this summer the Town began using them at bigger events. The first major event that saw their use was the Frisco BBQ Challenge.The stations use three bins to separate the different kinds of waste: trash, recyclable and compost. The stations also have people working at them to help event patrons separate the trash. The Town is also working with event vendors to help their conservation efforts.We work with the event planners to make sure … they are purchasing bulk mustard and ketchup or big bowls of sugar instead of little packets, and not using straws, said Carly Weir, executive director of the High Country Conservation Center.Another new step for Frisco has been the use of reusable cups made out of recyclable plastic. The Town chose them instead of compostable cups because compostable cups still use the throw-out method, Lifgren said.Still, some cups were found in the recyclables bin, in the trash or on the ground.We struggle with convenience versus zero waste, Lifgren said. If you were out on Music on Main at 11 oclock, you would notice how many people didnt take the effort to walk to the Zero-Waste Station.How effective the reusable cups are will be tested at the next few town events, including BeetleFest. The Town also is planning to have more Zero-Waste Stations and larger signs on lampposts directing patrons to the stations at upcoming events, Lifgren said.Upfront planning and communication with the vendors (are important to success), Weir said.
