Frisco plans for economic study

Lu Snyder

FRISCO – Frisco town officials’ recent decision to hire an economic development consultant might have something to do with the slumping economy or with the possibility of a Super Wal-Mart. But, more than anything, it has to do with planning for the town’s future.

Community Development Director Amy Ito said the decision came from a combination of factors, which coincide with the economy’s downturn and the construction of a new Target store in Silverthorne. Ito said town officials are trying to determine the best use for the large amount of undeveloped town land, as well as for redevelopment projects as the town approaches buildout.

“We’ve never had an economic development plan in the town,” Ito said. “It’s just a really great tool for strategizing and planning your future.”

An economic consultant will study the town’s businesses, the locations, demographics and traffic patterns, among other things.

One consultant assistant town manager Theresa Casey spoke with said simply changing the location of a business to a more prominent site can make a large difference in revenue.

“I think it’s important for us to look into the future to assess what the future looks like … and determine what alternatives there are,” said Councilmember Bernie Zurbriggen.

Ito said the deadline for bids is July 8. She hopes to have a short list for the council to review at its July 16 meeting, and said there is a chance council members might choose their candidate then.

“They’re looking to move pretty quickly on it,” Ito said.

Town officials hope to have the study completed within four to six months of hiring a consultant, Ito said.
