Frisco resident offers skin care products without chemicals and additives
FRISCO – The dry climate, intense sunshine and wintery conditions make Summit County a delight to play in, but it can wreak havoc on skin. But just because you don’t live in a tropical paradise doesn’t mean your face must suffer.
Frisco resident Myra Michelle Eby has captured the scents of honeydew melons, berries and vanilla beans and bottled them into a natural skin care line. Her plant-based products contain fresh fruit and vegetable purees including blueberry, pumpkin, cherry, apple and cranberry.
Creating kitchen cosmetics was always one of Eby’s favorite pastimes. In her 20s she began blending fruits and vegetables, creating “smoothies” for her face. Now, her products smell good enough to eat. Plus, they’re formulated and produced in Frisco.
Eby, age 40, moved to Frisco from Denver two and a half years ago and launched her line Nov. 6, 2000. She named it MyChelle Dermaceuticals, a combination of her first and middle names, pronounced “my shell” to remind people their largest organ, skin, is essentially their shell. She employs nine people and works with chemists who have backgrounds in dermatology to formulate her products.
“The fact that we have the science of dermatology backs our products,” Eby said. “It delivers real results. We use chiral technology so that the skin can readily absorb (nutrients). We use unique ingredients in their chiral form without the use of chemical preservatives and fragrances,” Eby said.
Molecules come in pairs, but the human body often only requires one side of the molecule. Chirally correct means either the right- or left-handed side of the molecule is used when science indicates the body prefers one over the other. The side it doesn’t need may actually harm the body (while the side it needs helps). Eby uses only the proper side of the molecule when it’s called for, which increases the absorption of nutrients found in her products and reduces irritation.
She decided to launch her own line after working for manufacturers of natural remedies and vitamins. For more than 20 years prior, she traveled nationwide, educating professionals and the general public about natural skin care products.
“I developed a great knowledge of skin, how it functions and what feeds skin,” she said. “The skin absorbs up to 60 percent of what you apply topically. You can do everything internally right (eat organic foods, avoid excess alcohol, drink purified water), but if externally you apply toxic chemicals through your skin care products, you’re negating what you’re doing internally.
“We don’t use chemical stabilizers or fragrances. We use high concentrations of therapeutic ingredients. We use 15 percent L-absorbic acid in the Perfect C Serum. Even dermatologists only use 10 percent and often charge $75. Our serum is $40 for one ounce. L-absorbic acid helps skin create an enzyme to produce collagen. It helps maintain and produce collagen elastin. I don’t know of any other company that’s going to the length that we are in producing highly-concentrated, cellular-renewal products without the use of potentially carcinogenic and toxic ingredients.”
Some sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that behave similar to estrogen in lab tests, causing cancer cells to grow more rapidly, Eby said. She avoids such potentially toxic agents as benzophenone-3, homosalate, 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor, octyl-methoxycinnamate and octyl-dimethyl-PABA in her sunscreen.
Eby distributes her products to natural food stores nationwide, including Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Vitamin Cottage. Her business has skyrocketed by 300 percent in the past year, she said.
In Summit County, Alpine Natural Foods, Prescription Alternatives and Mountain Sanctuary carry her products. Trial-size packages for specific skin types start at $21.95, and products range from $3.95 (for a trial size) to $39.95. For more information on MyChelle Dermaceuticals, call (970) 668-6209.
