From action to satisfaction: A two-part workshop will help women achieve their goals by taking action on them

FRISCO – If you’re having difficulty reaching your desired goals, it could be because you’re going about it the wrong way.

There’s a SMART way to set goals – making sure they’re Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Resourceful and Time-related, said Mary Lou Johns, a part-time Breckenridge resident, life coach and author of “Coach Yourself Into Action – How to Get What You Want with 7 Simple Strategies.”

Johns will lead a two-part women’s workshop this week on setting and reaching goals. The workshop is sponsored by the Summit County Women’s Center.

If you’ve had trouble reaching a personal goal recently, it could be because you’ve been too vague or unrealistic, Johns said. For example, many people will start the new year with the goal to lose weight. But how much? How are you going to do it? And by when?

“A lot of people have either wishful thinking or indeterminate goals,” Johns said.

According to Johns, you are more likely to realize goals if they are specific – “I am going to lose 15 pounds by July 15.” But those goals also must be realistic (“I will lose four pounds a month”) and you should have a plan and the resources to accomplish it.

“If you don’t know specifically where you’re going or what road you’re going to take, how are you going to get there?” Johns said.

In the Tuesday workshop, Johns will help participants understand SMART goals and gain clarity about their personal goals. On Thursday, she will review how to become intentional about a goal and three strategies for success – identifying potential obstacles, setting up a buddy system and writing about your goal.

The second workshop will build on the first, but it isn’t necessary to attend both workshops, Johns said.

SMART goal setting can help a number of people – from those who have a project in mind but aren’t sure how to approach it, to those who’ve struggled to achieve certain goals, to those who might not have a particular goal in mind but are feeling vaguely dissatisfied or unfocused.

As a life coach, Johns has helped clients with a variety of personal and business goals, including increasing their businesses’ client base, overcoming their fear of auditioning and writing a book. One client recently asked Johns to help her heal her relationship with her brother, Johns said.

Just as Johns has helped her clients take action on their goals to feel satisfied and successful, she hopes to help workshop participants do the same.

“That’s really what these workshops are about: being real clear on your goals and having strategies so you can be intentional about achieving them,” Johns said.
