Summit Barre & Fitness Studio combines full-body condition with a sense of community
We all love our specific sports, whether it’s biking, hiking, paddleboarding, skiing, snowboarding or a combination of recreational activities. But to prevent injuries and stay fit, we need a well-rounded approach to fitness, from strength and cardio to flexibility — and perhaps a little boot camp to get our booty, and everything else, in tip-top shape. That’s where Summit Barre & Fitness Studio in Frisco comes into play.
The full-service fitness studio offers about 18 classes a week in six different disciplines, in addition to personal training, nutrition classes, and, coming soon: livestream and on-demand classes. The goal: to help every client, no matter what age or fitness level, to feel confident, inspired and cared about.
When it comes to maintaining a fitness routine, Karen Frasier, owner of Summit Barre & Fitness Studio, understands the power and importance of community.
“We focus on building a fitness community where people feel safe to go and get overall fitness,” she said.
She tries to keep classes small, under 10 participants, so every instructor provides personalized attention to everyone in class. She introduces people and asks about their cardio and fitness abilities to ensure she’s not pushing anyone beyond their limits. Then, she motivates them to get a great workout. She also encourages them to monitor their heart rate with a fitness watch.
She purchased Barre Forte in Frisco last fall, and about a month ago she changed the name to reflect the diversity of classes Summit Barre & Fitness offers. She also incorporated yoga, sculpt, mat Pilates, bootcamp and jump sport trampoline classes, in addition to personal training and nutritional counseling, to cater to varying needs of clients, for an overall fitness experience.
“Fitness is important for longevity,” Frasier said. “I adhere to the philosophy of not doing just one workout; I don’t believe that just one type of fitness is really a great thing, so we offer everything.”
The studio’s variety of classes promote a well-rounded body and mind, as well as a sense of community to keep people engaged. It caters to all ages; Frasier herself is almost 60 and has been teaching fitness classes since she was 17. She instructs older clients, as well as younger ones, including a group of homeschooled kids, who she has watched develop more confidence and better posture since the first day they walked in.
“We’re giving them something they can do for the rest of their lives,” she said. “Posture is very important, and a lot of these kids didn’t understand that before they came.”
Boot camps and one-on-one training cater to each individual; Frasier finds out what each client’s need is, be it working with or preventing injuries or increasing core, upper body, lower body or cardio strength, and then she’ll “push them harder” on that specific goal.
At the end of August, she plans on debuting recorded, on-demand classes, many of which are bite-size and a la carte, for easy access to a quick workout on abs or glutes or another area. She’ll also offer live (and recorded) Zoom classes with instructors like Mackenzie Simpson, who taught at the studio but has since moved away. Frasier currently has eight instructors and is always looking for more; the most important quality she looks for is personality, to foster that sense of community, which is a primary foundation of Summit Barre & Fitness.
Traditional Barre: Focuses on each muscle group with small isometric movements using various weights, bands and balls and basic ballet movements (60 mins).
Barre Express: A condensed traditional barre class in a fast-paced workout (45 mins).
Boot Camp: A full-body boot camp discipline (45 mins).
Power Sculpt: Focuses on core and body muscle strength using dumbbells, bands and balls with spurts of cardio (60 mins).
Yoga Sculpt: Combines traditional yoga poses and principles with strength training and hand weights (60 mins).
Jump Sport Bounce: Cardio intensive with strength training intervals (45 mins).
Mat Pilates: A moderate intensity, total body, core-intensive workout with a focus on balance, flexibility, strength and stability. Several levels of intensity for each exercise allows participants to progress at their own pace. (60 mins).
Yoga Power Hour: A flow class taught by Latonya Hill, consisting of strong moving flow that cultivates balance, stability, flexibility, breath awareness and coordination. Classes are creative and playful, with a focus on mindfulness, not perfection. All levels welcome (60 mins).
Nutritional counseling: Begins Aug. 10 with Mindful Eating and takes place once a month.
Membership: $99/month for unlimited group fitness classes; special pricing for those in the education, civic and medical industries.
