Fulton & Meas: Arms control

Nate Fulton & Tiernan Meas, Silverthorne

We agree with Tony Flitcraft’s article in which he claims that the Second Amendment protects our rights as U.S citizens to bear arms. A survey done in 1994 conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Americans use guns to protect themselves from intruders/criminals breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.Although we agree with Flitcraft, we also need to regulate gun control to help keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people. We should regulate what type of guns certain age groups can purchase. Example, age group 18-21 should only be able to purchase hunting rifles. Another example could be the age group 21-26 could only purchase hunting rifles and handguns. After that age group it particularly shouldn’t matter, people should be responsible enough to be able to control what they do with the guns. The people of our country should be able to protect themselves. When the Second Amendment was written, we needed guns to protect ourselves from England and the government. Now, we use guns for protection from one another in the U.S and also to protect our loved ones. Yes, our crimes in the U.S now are mostly gun involved, but that doesn’t mean we should take the right to bear arms from people, just because certain people can’t control their actions with a gun.In conclusion, don’t let the government take your right to bear arms. By the government doing so, we show we are weak and don’t have independence. Flitcraft quotes Hitler saying that the people should not have the right to bear arm because Hitler thinks that he should have all the power. Do you want your government to be the same and be controlled the rest of your life?Nate Fulton & Tiernan Meas, Silverthorne
