Funkiphino infuses Snake’s 30th anniversary with soul

KEYSTONE – Why’s the Snake River Saloon celebrating its 30th anniversary with Funkiphino?Well, it could be that the Boulder-based band just played at the Independence Ball for the President’s Inauguration, or that it has revved up crowds at Avalanche and Broncos games, as well as at the Governor’s Cup.But the bottom line is the band with the funky name that borders obscenity is just plain good.”It’s one of the most exciting bands,” said Jim Shields, general manager of the Snake River Saloon. “People love to move to the music they’re playing. It’s a band that’s going places.”The 10-piece band takes its inspiration from Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, Donna Summer, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.Made up of musicians who met at the University of Colorado’s music school six years ago, the band has discovered the nexus between music and magic. Heavy on horns, the band blends the funky sounds of the 1970s with new school compositions. Old-school Hammond organ and soulful vocals add to its catchy harmonies.Though plenty of party bands can crank out cover tunes, Funkiphino stands out with artful songwriting and energetic stage personalities. Its debut CD, “Lovin’ Life,” is a testimony to what funky, soulful music can do to get a party started. But you don’t need the CD to join in the fun; Funkiphino plays tonight at the Snake River Saloon’s 30th anniversary party.
