Galen Everett Bowles passed away April 3 near his home in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. with family by his side. He was born Jan. 21, 1935 in Platteville, Colo. to Everett and Gladys Bowles.

He grew up in Keenesburg, Colo., and the family lived in the states of Wyoming and California before returning to Keenesburg where he graduated from high school. He received a basketball scholarship to Colorado State College of Education in Greeley where he got his bachelor’s degree in biology and later a master’s in counseling. At 6 feet 6 inches tall, he was the starting center for the Colorado State College of Education basketball team all four years.

On June 9, 1956 he married Katherine Milburn of Denver, and they settled in Keenesburg where he was a teacher and coach. Children born while in Keenesburg were Lisa in 1957, Brett in 1958 and twins, Burt and Brad in 1960. The family of six lived in a two-bedroom teacherage on the grounds of the Keenesburg High School.

They moved to Rocky Ford, Colo. in 1963 where he taught high school biology and coached the Rocky Ford Meloneers basketball team. Another daughter, Laura, was born in 1964 making the family complete. He and Kathy had wonderful years with all of their close friends during the 1060s in Rocky Ford.

In 1968 the family moved to Yuma, Colo., where he taught in the high school and coached the Yuma Indians basketball team until 1977. Many close friendships that remained to date were established.

Galen and Kathy dreamed of living in the Colorado mountains and in 1977 they moved to Dillon where they lived for more than 30 years. He was the student counselor at Summit High School and later made the move to being a successful Summit County Realtor with a host of clients.

In 2008, Galen and Kathy moved to San Juan Capistrano, where they retired and enjoyed the ocean, climate and visits from family and friends. Galen missed Kathy terribly after her death just one year ago, and now they are together in eternity.

Condolences may be sent to the family at 3 Trestles, Laguna Niguel, CA, 92677 and there will be a celebration of Galen and Kathy’s life together on April 23 in Silverthorne. Please contact the family at bdbowles4@q.com or (719) 559-0971 for details if you would like to attend.
