Gary E. Schraut: Was the red menace for real?

Tina Dupuy did a little opinion piece for you and in an effort to bash the 112th congress, also bashed Sen. McCarthy. I have attached some information from the Internet (Wikipedia) which shows that the KGB confirmed much of what Sen. McCarthy was concerned about and in fact, many of the people questioned by Sen. McCarthy’s committee refused to confirm allegiance to the United States and many took the fifth while testifying. Now standing on the fifth amendment and refusing to testify so that you do not incriminate yourself is good, but what might that imply?

Anyway, it appears the KGB have proven Tina wrong, but perhaps Tina is more informed about communism in the USA in the 1950s than the KGB or our own FBI.

When discussing Sen. McCarthy we can agree, disagree, but should we not be truthful? Sen. McCarthy’s approval at one time during these hearings was over 50 percent (better than President Obama’s polling numbers) and from what I read, Sen. McCarthy’s polling numbers only dropped after he became aggressive towards the US Army and President Eisenhower.

Anyway, someone reading that column without the curiosity to do a little research might be strongly misled by some serious omissions, which unfortunately is what is destroying the American public’s faith in our media. More just an FYI, I am visiting Summit County on vacation and read your paper every day when I am here.
