Geeks prepare for battle at softball exhibition game

Science meets the arts with the inaugural Battle of the Geeks softball exhibition game between the summer staffs of The Lake Dillon Theatre Company and Keystone Science School Aug. 22. Proceeds from the event benefit both organizations.

“The Keystone Science School and The Lake Dillon Theatre have a lot of the same supporters, and a lot of the same patrons,” said Dillon theatre executive director Joshua Blanchard. “We also have a similar mission with our educational programs during the summer. We just thought it would be a fun opportunity to reach out to the community and do something fun.”

The softball game features only five innings, with activities or competitions, like a relay, between each one. Both organizations will perform songs, and there will be a cheer-off between the two teams. Spectators pick the winner.

Before the game starts, there will be an “ump auction,” where audience members can bid to call the game for an inning. Attendees can also pledge a donation for each run batted and cheer for their favorite “geek.”

“We’re just all looking forward to having a good night,” Blanchard said. “Both organizations work really hard during the summer.”

Goodies like popcorn, peanuts and hot dogs will be available. Beer and wine will also be for sale.

The game starts 5 p.m. Aug. 22 at the David Olbright Memorial Field in Dillon. The game is free, with a suggested donation at the door.
