Genuine Jazz celebrates 22

KEELY BROWNspecial to the daily

BRECKENRIDGE – The month of June brings one of the most popular events of the year to Breckenridge – the Genuine Jazz Festival. For the 22nd straight year, the town plays host to the indoor/outdoor festival that promises to offer something for everyone.Throughout the three-day event, 18 performers will be featured on three different stages, all within walking distance of one another. According to event producer Mike O’Brien, Genuine Jazz is one of only a handful of nationwide jazz festivals to reach its 22nd year. “The key to its success is our location, as well as meeting the expectations that people have every year,” he said. “People who attend the festival know they’re going to get to see great artists in one spot, artists they normally wouldn’t get to see without going to several different venues and locations.”According to O’Brien, festival organizers have upped the ante by bringing in nationallyknown performers whose names will be familiar to many jazz aficionados.”This year, we’re featuring artists that are on the top of the current jazz charts,” said O’Brien. “We’ve got some big names coming in.”Those big names include performers Tim Bowman, Eric Darius, Nils and Marion Meadows, representing a range of styles from traditional to fusion, from smooth jazz to gospel-inflected contemporary. In addition to the headliners performing in the Ten Mile Ballroom (located in the Village at Breckenridge Ski Resort), the festival will feature outdoor performances at the Maggie Pond Stage and Main Street Station Stage on Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday. These outdoor concerts are free to the public and will feature a roster of crowd favorites, including Dotsera and Nelson Rangell. To add to the lively atmosphere, food and merchandise vendors will be on hand, and Main Street merchants will keep their stores open throughout the three-day event. “The plaza will be very animated,” said Christopher Love, resort manager for Hyatt Main Street Station. “It’s just like a village festival.”
