Get the facts straight about Smith Ranch; vote to approve Safeway rezoning

Sara Greenberg - Silverthorne

I am a full-time resident of the town of Silverthorne and was very concerned about a big grocery store going into my town so I attended many meetings concerning how the Smith Ranch land was going to be used.

What everyone needs to keep in mind is that the land was purchased to be developed and is not open space. With this in mind, what is the best use of this land for the residents of Silverthorne?

Silverthorne is one of the fastest growing towns in the country. How are we going to meet the needs of our evolving and diverse population if we do not balance residential and commercial development?

I feel that Safeway officials have gone out of their way to listen to the residents of Silverthorne and address our concerns. They have created a building that has a mountain feel on all four sides, using rock, timber, stucco and brick.

They have created an extensive landscaping plan with both large and small trees and are replacing what was determined to be “low quality wetlands” with a larger wetland area and pond.

They are using the lowest lighting possible to prevent light pollution and adapted a lower architecture to preserve the mountain views.

Let’s get the facts correct: This grocery store only affects an 11-acre parcel that is located next to the Elks Lodge, that sits between industrial warehouses and along a busy state highway.

Let’s be a progressive community that seeks to balance residential and commercial development. For the long-term future of Silverthorne, vote yes Dec. 9.
