Getting on The Green in Breckenridge

Special to the Daily/Tammy Moniz

The Green, a chart-topping reggae band from Hawaii, stops at three20south in Breckenridge tonight as part of its 19-city Liars & Lovers tour. The group’s sophomore album, “Ways & Means,” spent four weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Reggae Chart, and its new single, “Liar,” is out on Easy Star Records, with another album on the way. Here, guitarist-vocalist Zion Thompson raps on what The Green is all about:

It’s basically multi-genre-influenced roots reggae – Hawaiian style. Sometimes we speak of Hawaiian issues directly in our lyrics, but we’re not always necessarily trying to incorporate anything Hawaiian into our music. It just finds its way into the groove or the lyrics sometimes naturally because that’s where we come from.

The Green formed out of a group of us who had grown up around the Hawaii reggae music scene and had been performing and recording together for years. We had all these songs and ideas so we put the band together. It was a good feeling when it started; we had a vibe going.

The name was almost not even a serious suggestion at first, because we knew by being a reggae band that the first thing people think of would be herb, but it immediately grew on everyone. It’s a color created by the combination of other colors and in reggae music green represents the connection to the land, and for us that land is our home of Hawaii.

It’s always pretty classic when we leave someone at a rest stop or gas station – purely accidental of course.

We’ve toured Colorado a bunch but never made it to Breckenridge. We’re looking forward to jamming there for the first time.

Lots of positive vibes, high energy and lots of fun. Come party with us, Breckenridge. Check us out at Mahalo.
