Gifts should be mailed soon

SUMMIT COUNTY – Packages, cards and letters headed to military personnel overseas need to be sent before Dec. 16 to get there in time for the holidays.

According to U.S. Postal Service officials, packages and other mail sent anywhere in the country should be mailed no later than Dec. 18; items being mailed within the state can be mailed as late as Dec. 20.

Items headed via air to Africa and South and Central America should be sent by Dec. 9. Items headed via air to all other countries can be sent by Dec. 16. Items shipped by surface mail should be sent this month.

Other tips:

? Select a box strong enough to protect the contents

? Make sure there are few or no markings on the exterior

? Cushion contents with newspaper, bubble wrap or styrofoam. Pack tightly.

? Do not use wrapping paper, string, masking or cellophane tape on the outside of the box

? Print the delivery and return addresses on one side of the package

? Place your return address on a piece of paper or label inside the package.

? Remove batteries from toys. Place them next to toys in the box.
