Gipsy Moon plays a free show at Alma’s Only Bar tonight

Special to the DailyGipsy Moon brings its own take on bluegrass to Alma tonight for a free show at Alma's Only Bar. Concertgoers can expect 'soothing harmonies, raging solos and dirt-encrusted bass lines (that) bring an old-time style into an exciting new dimension,' Silas Herman said.

They call it “gipsygrass” because, while rooted in traditional folk and bluegrass, the members of the all-acoustic group Gipsy Moon write almost all of the music they play, and put their own twist on it.

“It’s something like a backwoods hoedown meets the smoking basement of a New York jazz club,” said Silas Herman (guitar, mandolin), who is the son of Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman. Other group members include David Matters (banjo/vocals/guitar) Mackenzie Paige (guitar/vocals/tenor guitar/washboard) and Collin Huff (bass/vocals/guitar).

“It is nice looking at a big crowd smiling and dancing away and being a part of it,” Herman said on the group’s inspiration, and he cited funny stories from their West Coast tour that involved doing MadLibs with the crowd. “We have had really creative audiences. MadLibs are funny when you’re young, but twice as funny when you get older,” he said.

The group is currently fundraising to record its first album; to do so, it will seek support from fans through a project at

As for tonight’s show, concertgoers can expect “soothing harmonies, raging solos and dirt encrusted bass lines (that) bring an old-time style into an exciting new dimension – one that hippies and poets, lovers and dancers, freaks and families alike can all come together and move in ways that their bodies have never known,” Herman said. “Expect a show that you can dance, and party hard, to.”
