Global Warming and CO2

Jim ScheifleySummit Cove

RE: Letter by Gary Schaecher on March 11I agree with Gary Schaecher that 99 percent of all scientists don’t dispute that CO2 levels in the atmosphere have increased. A recent study published by the Carbon Dioxide Research Group of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California proclaimed that CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere increased by 18.8 percent from 1959 to 2003. At first this seems an alarming statistic. The levels increased from 316 parts per million (ppm) to 375 ppm during the study period. That must mean that the other components of the atmosphere decreased by 59ppm during the period. Other atmospheric gasses such as oxygen, nitrogen, ozone, etc. went from an aggregate of 999,639 ppm to 999,580 ppm. This represents a mere 00.0059 percent decrease in the other gasses in the atmosphere, hardly a cause for concern. Some in the scientific community consider CO2 a “trace element,” as there is so little of it in the atmosphere (.0378 percent by volume). What Mr. Schaecher does not say in his letter is that 99 percent of the scientists believe that the increased CO2 levels are the root cause of global warming. Here I agree with him as well. The jury is still out. On this matter I’m neither progressive nor conservative, just a skeptic. I think the scientists tend to agree with the underlying political objective of whoever is providing their funding.
