Gmerek’s column bordered hate speech

David Leach, Frisco

Andrew Gmerek’s column (SDN, Nov. 12) contained a point I felt it important to respond to. In his piece, he concludes near the end that “the greatest threat to the American way of life (is) the Conservative Christian Right.” When will the hatred and intolerance by those on the “left” regarding people of faith and conviction stop? In my opinion, his statement borders on hate speech. Let’s take a look at these “threatening” people. They are married (to a member of the opposite sex – a radical idea), have children (because they believe in life), pay their taxes (thankfully, that burden is lower now), believe in justice (so they favor going to war to get those who would destroy us) and want to see an America that honors God (a belief held by our Founding Fathers). According to Mr. Gmerek, Osama Bin Laden, a man who has already attacked our country, killing thousands of innocent Americans and is dedicated to destroying everything that America stands for, is less of a threat to our American way of life than a conservative Christian. The absurdity of such a statement is mind numbing and Mr. Gmerek is right, his opinion made for “lousy reading.”
