GOCO gives nod to B&B grant

SUMMIT COUNTY – Open Space officials have three pieces of good news to tell residents. On Friday, the B&B Mines open space deal took a step closer to securing much needed funding. A Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) projects committee recommended that its board approve a $600,000 grant to Breckenridge. Most of the project committee members are GOCO board members so the grant is likely to come through for the county and Breckenridge Open Space programs, said Summit County manager Ron Holliday, who serves on the GOCO board. The lottery grant would help fund Breckenridge’s portion of the B&B Mines open space cost. Breckenridge and Summit County are splitting the $9 million cost of the 1,840-acre purchase, scheduled to close this summer.Cleanup costs at the Jessie, Royal Tiger and Wellington-Oro mines will add to the overall costs. An open space bonding issue is on the Breckenridge ballot April 6 to fund the remainder of the town’s portion. The second and third bits of news came when Summit County commissioners Monday approved negotiations for the purchase of two properties for open space in the Peru Creek basin. The Roman Millsite and the Brittle Silver Claim would eventually be donated to the U.S. Forest Service. The county would pay the current owner, Transpacific Tourism of Colorado Inc., nearly $18,100 or about $860 per acre. The area in the Peru Creek drainage is popular with backcountry recreationists, said a county open space report.County Open Space director Todd Robertson has said the goal is to remove all development potential in the remote area.
