BRECKENRIDGE ” Breckenridge police officers arrested a Grand Junction man early Tuesday morning on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed two locals on Main Street, according to a press release from the police department. The charges were amended Tuesday to first degree assault, according to Breckenridge Police Chief Rick Holman.

Officers arrested Justin Rendell Reid, 30, on South Main Street near the Breckenridge Brewery at about 1 a.m.

The two victims, Michael Day, 29, and Justin Knight, 26, both of Breckenridge, were both taken to Summit Medical Center, where they underwent surgery, the release said.

Police determined that Day and Knight were involved in a verbal altercation inside Cecilia’s Bar before the alleged stabbing. The two were asked to leave. Once outside the bar, Reid allegedly approached Day, and the two began arguing. Reid allegedly attacked Day with a knife, stabbing him in the chest. Knight saw his friend on the ground and chased after Reid, who then allegedly attacked Knight as well, stabbing him in the arms and hands. A witness knocked Reid off of Knight during the stabbing, the release said.

Breckenridge Police Department spokesperson Crystal Dean said investigators do not believe the men knew each other before the incident.

“They truly believe it was unprovoked. That’s what our officers believe at this time,” Dean said, adding that investigators are still interviewing witnesses.

Both victims are expected to recover from their wounds.
