Green machines join Frisco’s fleet

FRISCO – Taking care to protect our air is an effort the town of Frisco is putting into action, adding two hybrid gas-electric vehicles to their town fleet. One is a hybrid half-ton Chevy pickup that Frisco’s street foreman toddles around town in. On the road, it works just like a regular gas-guzzler, but when it rolls to below 15 miles an hour and the brakes are applied, the gas motor stops running. As to the truck’s performance, “so far so good” said Frisco fleet foreman Howard Freeman. The other hybrid addition is a Ford Escape SUV, just put into service a couple weeks ago, which the town’s building inspector uses for transportation. “We’re hoping that it will do well, too,” Freeman said.Frisco’s efforts at protecting the local environment are part of a broader environmental policy, outlined in a comprehensive Environmental Stewardship Policy adopted earlier this year. In it, the town addresses ways to “increase resource conservation, reduce waste, maximize energy efficiency, increase alternative modes of transportation and fuel, and protect natural resources including air and water …”The town replaces vehicles as they age or gain mileage, and Freeman said that they’ll consider adding more hybrid vehicles over that cycle.Hopefully, things will go well this year, and if possible, I’m sure that we’ll look at more next year, or when replacements come up,” he said.
