Green Mountain camping begins today, fees collected

SILVERTHORNE – Campgrounds around the Green Mountain Reservoir open today, Dillon Ranger District officials announced. The fee-based campgrounds include Cow Creek South, Cow Creek North, Elliot Creek and Willows. Fees for parking at Cataract Lake, Surprise and Eaglesmere trailheads also begin this weekend. Prairie Point and McDonald Flats campgrounds will not open until later in May. “We’re opening the sites early because we have been getting a lot of weekend use in the month of May,” said Ken Waugh, the district’s recreation officer. Summit County sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling the sites in the evenings. Forest Service campgrounds rules are that quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Late-night parties will not be tolerated when people are trying to sleep, Waugh said. The fees are the same as last year – $5 per vehicle per day, which must be paid upon arrival. The district has hired three seasonal employees to clean the restrooms, pick up litter, maintain facilities, enforce regulations and collect fees. Garbage service will be provided, however, campers need to bring their own drinking water. For information, call (970) 468-5400.
