Hannah Charneski: Buck, Leonard freak out this young voter

Hannah Charneski

As a new voter (I turned 18 in June), I felt it important to say a few words about this year’s election. I have grown up in a highly political family. I told my parents early on I would register as a Democrat only to be able to vote in the primary. I told them I was an independent from then on and that I would vote for candidates I felt represented me best. They brought me up to be strong and to think for myself. They have supported my choice to not simply vote party lines. I have read, listened, Googled and have made decisions in this election based on beliefs that I find important.

I am a young woman and could not believe when I heard Ken Buck was 100 percent in favor of taking away my right to choose. I am not a person who would ever consider an abortion as a form of birth control. However, if I were raped or in cases of incest or danger to the mother, I would want that choice. Ken Buck plans to take it away from me. Tim Leonard is another candidate who makes me uncomfortable. He has six children, and I applaud his right to home-school them. However, he would like to get rid of the Department of Education. He favors vouchers. Really? Strong schools and a good education is extremely important for our future. To me these candidates running for senate positions at the federal and state level and are backed by the tea party are so extreme they freak me out. I am voting this year not because my parents are telling me to, but to protect my future, my body, my future children and my state. Michael Bennet and Jeanne Nicholson have earned my vote!
