Happy to see mandated tests

Re: Schools score high (SDN, Dec. 6)It is nice to see an article admitting Summit County School’s academic achievement. The tests and measurement included reading, writing, math and science, along with safety and school environment.According to superintendent of schools Millie Hamner, a fairly narrow measure of our schools success. I, for one, am glad that we have “mandated” tests that require some attention to these basic academics.Last I heard, we are spending a majority of the education budget on classes and expenses beyond these basics. Our elementary teachers, school administrators, and teachers in these subjects should receive great respect for their efforts. Although I don’t have children in these schools, I am convinced that we continue to have the best teachers in the country teaching in Summit County. Our bright young scholars should be afforded at least as much space in our newspaper, as the weekly “Petscene” pet column with refugee pit bulls from Denver.
