Hate crime suspected in beating of CU student

BOULDER – The beating of a Nigerian student at the University of Colorado is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Boulder Police say the 19-year-old Olubiyi Ogundipe was walking with a friend early Saturday when three men used racial epithets, called the victims monkeys and told them to go back to their country of origin.

Police say Ogundipe turned around and confronted the shouters verbally. Then 22-year-old Joseph Owen Coy allegedly started punching Ogundipe in the face, knocking him to the ground.

Coy, who is white, was arrested by the university police officer who witnessed the beating. Coy was in Boulder County Jail Saturday facing felony charges of bias-motivated crime. Police sought two men who were with Coy during the fight.
