Hateful attacks on Bush were unbecoming

Maggie ButlerSilverthorne

With the elections behind us, I would like to reflect on the lack of dignified discourse we have had to endure both nationally and here in Summit County. I don’t consider myself a particularly “fragile” person, but the lengths to which the Democratic Party went to to defile a sitting president is completely disrespectful and is very unbecoming. I believe that John Kerry and the Democrats’ tactics of preaching doom and gloom, hatred and spite backfired as we saw America re-elect President Bush with both an electoral majority and by a popular majority of 53 percent. This letter is not to suggest that Democrats should couch their opinions or refrain from exercising their First Amendment rights. On the contrary, debate is what this great country was founded on. But spewing hateful statements and leading venomous attacks on your opponent is distasteful, to say the least. Hate is not healthy for the fabric or morale of America or our mountain community. Remember that you are not just attacking a political platform, but insulting your friends and neighbors, too.I hope the Summit Daily News holds Democrats and Republicans to a higher standard when it comes to advocating our beliefs. And to all of Summit County’s election winners – congratulations. While I may or may not have voted for you, I have faith that each office holder will work to achieve the best results for all Summit County voters.
