Haz mat crew contains acid spill at Copper

COPPER MOUNTAIN – A resort security guard inspecting chemical storage discovered a leaking drum of hydrochloric acid at the Cirque Condominiums Monday.According to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the security guard was checking how chemicals were stored around the resort and signs associated with the hazardous materials. The guard, Steve Nordby, opened the door of the room and immediately noticed a strong chemical odor and saw that all of the wiring and metal in the room was corroded.Copper Mountain firefighters wearing protective gear entered the room and determined one of the several 55-gallon drums had leaked about a gallon of the acid onto the concrete floor, the report said. Hydrochloric acid is kept around the resort for treating pool water.- Daily News staff report
