head: High school academic team tops division

by Reid Williams

DENVER – Summit High School’s Academic Team moves on the state championships with Saturday’s win at the regional level.

The team, which is tested on trivia and knowledge in school subjects, took first place in the 4A division at the Colorado Regional Knowledge Bowl in Westminster. In overall competition, the team was beaten only by Fairview High School, in division 5A. Seniors Todd Martinez, Mike Samuels, Tamara Nowakiwsky, John Montepare and juniors Mike Koop and Matt Keeling will compete in the state championships in Alamosa May 7 and 8.

The team also took first place among 4A schools in Colorado at the National Knowledge Master Open on April 17.

“These students are really putting it together and now have their sights set on the Colorado state championships where our team placed second in 4A last year,” said coach David McBride. “This year, we want the first-place trophy.”
