Heavy snow loads can create hazard areas around buildings

JANICE KURBJUNSUMMIT DAILY NEWS

When snow accumulates, it can pose risks to the buildings it surrounds as well as individuals standing under or around the structures. The Town of Breckenridge and the Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District encourage residents, business owners and passersby to take extra safety measures around buildings due to the large amounts of snow received this winter. They offer the following advice: • Be aware of your surroundings and look for accumulated snow on rooftops, • Property owners should be proactive in assessing and removing their roofs’ snow load, particularly on lower-pitched roofs, • Clear snow from below-grade and grade-level bedroom windows to ensure they will open in an emergency, • Clear snow from exhaust and dryer vents, as well as gas meters, to avoid a fire or explosion, • Avoid using untrained individuals to clear snow from roofs, • Inspect roofs for leaks or structural deficiencies that may develop during the winter, and• Clear gutters, drains and downspouts of ice and debris.Contact the Red, White and Blue Fire District at (970) 453-2474 with any questions.
