Heeney: The place to (water) ski

A good test to separate the true Summit County water-sport lovers from the rest is to ask them if they own a wet suit ” because that’s what they’ll need if they want to enjoy one of Heeney’s finest gems: Green Mountain Reservoir.

Unlike Dillon Reservoir, Green Mountain allows swimming and waterskiing, as well as windsurfing, jetskiing and cliff jumping. But did we mention that you’ll want a wet suit? After a day on the water, plan to camp on the shores of Green Mountain ” just bring a fleece and some firewood, and you’re set for a night under a darkened sky, crowded with stars.

Heeney is a popular destination for fishermen and hunters, as well. From the banks of the reservoir, Heeney provides easy access to the water (the town has a marina) and plenty of trails leading to prime hunting grounds in the Gore Range and Eagles Nest Wilderness.

Any true local can tell you how to get to Heeney. But we’ll give you a hint: It lies at the lowest, northern end of the county on the shores of Green Mountain Reservoir. Just head north of Silverthorne, up Highway 9.

With a permanent population of approximately 70 people, Heeney is often the forgotten residential area of Summit County. ≈

The town has no mayor because it’s a community, not an incorporated town. Of course, there’s no town hall, but a community center and fire station acts as a hub for potlucks, dances and parties; it also houses equipment to protect Heeney from fire.
