Heidi Spurgeon: Looking forward to Lowe’s

Heidi Spurgeon

About Lowe’s coming to Silverthorne: I’m happy and look forward to its opening. Sadly some see this as a travesty, a blemish on the mountainside. Really? Is it any worse than the Walgreens and other buildings on the Dillon side of I-70? Or the factory stores ? I think it’s about time that we got a major store up here considering all the closings we’ve seen this year like Borders and Old Navy, just to name a few. Some of us need to work, and 150 new jobs sounds good to me.

The two hardware stores up here cater to the wealthy, and they all close around 5 o’clock, when many of us get off work. And I’m tired of being ripped off by paying 15 bucks for a screwdriver. How many of us drive to Avon or Evergreen to get carpeting or paint? Lowe’s will not fail and close – it is a healthy company that will employ many and offer affordable home improvement supplies to those of us not living in million-dollar homes.

Visitors see many stores when they hit the exit, big deal if there is another. It also needs to be said that no matter what the pay is at Lowe’s, it’s better than nothing for some of us. Yes, this is a mountain getaway, it’s also home to working class people who, without them, our visitors would have no services. They deserve to have a new place for employment and an affordable place to buy things to improve their homes.

In these times of inflation and unemployment we need to be grateful that a large employer is willing to build up here. I say welcome to Lowe’s and thank you for giving Summit County a chance. If you don’t agree, go over pay somewhere else!
