Helping out pets

Sally Beerup

I would like to take an opportunity to clarify a point in Jane Stebbins’ 4/10 opinion column about “Fido’s Healthcare” and our taxes. Since she declined to name the special interest group that is lobbying for universal pet healthcare, I’m not certain we are talking about the same thing, but I didn’t want to risk the harm that might inadvertently happen because of confusion over two separate issues for animals. There is a check-off on your 2001 Colorado state income tax form that will let caring people donate any amount to fund Colorado entities who are responsible for spay/neuter programs, not universal healthcare. Spay/neuter programs will help eliminate the need for pet euthanasia due to unwanted pets and uncontrolled pet births. I agree with Jane when she says there are too many of the human race who are underfed and uncared for, but as humans, we have a choice in birth control. Animals are unfortunately dependent upon the very same human race to make logical, intelligent choices for them and they suffer greatly for it in too many cases. You can make a tax-deductible contribution to this Fund at anytime so for more information on the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund, call 303-722-6435 or http://www.savecoloradopets.org.Or you can contact the League for Animals & People of the Summit (L.A.P.S.) at http://www.colorado.net/~laps or laps@colorado.net for more information about membership or donations. Please help the ones you can, whether two or four-legged!
