Here’s how to get free health care

Alex Miller, Frisco

Bill Bauer’s Aug. 16 letter regarding health care suggests that if you want to “get your nose fixed or droopy eyelids lifted, pay for that yourself.” He also notes that it’s a shame that our great country can’t think of a way to provide affordable health care for everyone. But there is a way right now to get free, quality health care courtesy of Uncle Sam: Join the military. The health care benefits are so good with the U.S. military that if you or your dependents want elective surgery – like a nose or boob job – the U.S. taxpayer will foot the bill – really.Of course, military service nowadays carries with it the inconvenient “anti-benefit” of possibly being killed in Iraq or Afghanistan for no discernible reason, but wouldn’t it be nice to know, regardless of whether you’d died for oil or political hubris or whatever, your wife back in Oklahoma has a brand-new pair of 36-D’s? Other options for those seeking free health care include becoming a member of the U.S. Congress or being incarcerated in one of our country’s many fine prisons (not necessarily in that order). For the rest of us who are either not wealthy or lucky enough to have company-sponsored health insurance, we can only wait in line at the free clinic, hoping the day arrives when Washington decides universal health care for American citizens is more important than, say, dropping $100 billion-plus on a disastrous war or arranging more tax cuts for zillionaires.
