High Country Soccer Association crowns youth league champions

Over the weekend, High Country Soccer Association crowned several champions in its youth leagues.
Coach Laura Rowe’s team earned the championship title in the UBE girls division.
Despite competing in a league comprised of third through fifth graders, Rowe’s squad stood out not just for their skill, but also for their youth. The team featured only two fifth-graders and one fourth-grader — the rest of the roster was made up entirely of third-grade students.
“They have often been slightly intimidated as they are usually smaller in size,” Rowe said. “This hasn’t stopped them from working and fighting for possession of the game though. Many of these girls have played together since kindergarten, and they have been so fun to coach along the way. The improvements, both individually and as a team, that these girls have made since first starting have been amazing to watch each season.”

A champion was also decided in the BRE coed division. This year, Coach Ryan Thompson’s team — the Breck Bananas — got the honor of receiving championship trophies.
With humor and individuality helping to anchor the team, the Breck Bananas embraced imperfections, celebrated unique contributions and created a supportive environment.
“Coaching this team together with Kelly Owens has been a joy,” Thompson said. “We’ve gone from watching a swarm of bees chase the ball around the field to seeing players think critically, play with intention and understand both their own strengths and those of their teammates. High Country Soccer has been a wonderful organization to be part of, consistently fostering a positive, team-oriented atmosphere where kids can build skills, confidence and friendships.”
The mission of High Country Soccer Association is to provide an optimal soccer environment where every player can develop to their fullest potential regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity, skill level or financial capabilities. The organization strives to provide opportunities for every child and adult who wishes to play soccer.
